Nikon Healthcare Microscope Business Marks 100th Anniversary

Juni 30, 2025

Today Nikon Corporation celebrates the 100th anniversary of its microscope business, marked from the launch of the JOICO microscope in 1925, the milestone product that laid the foundation for Nikon's microscope business. Nikon's microscopes employ optical technology to reveal the microscopic world and are widely used in advanced research and industrial inspection across scientific, medical, and industrial fields. With the goal of improving people's quality of life, Nikon will continue to pursue even further advancement in its healthcare business over the next 100 years.

On this centennial milestone in its microscope business, Nikon established a logo and key message encapsulating its aspirations and vision for the next 100 years. Today, July 1, 2025, Nikon is unveiling the key visual and statement to celebrate the anniversary and is launching a special 100th Anniversary Microscope Business webpage.

Nikon’s Aspirations and Determination Reflected in the 100th-Anniversary Visual and Statement

Over the past 100 years, Nikon has harnessed optical technology to advance its microscopes in response to innovations in science, what scientists strive to discover and observe and to advance human knowledge. That desire for understanding has been the very origin of our endeavors and the driving force behind our evolution. By visualizing life phenomena occurring in the microscopic world, phenomena that cannot be captured by the naked eye, we have continuously contributed to the progress of science and medicine.

Today, Nikon microscopes are widely employed across diverse fields throughout the world. In research environments at companies and educational institutions, they facilitate new discoveries in medical and environmental investigative settings, they enable more precise inspections and analyses, thereby supporting people's health and enriching their lives.

Our aim is to make the unseen visible so that the unknown becomes known. With this purpose, we continue to take on the challenge of using optical technology to bring the invisible world to light. We believe this challenge will lead to a healthier and brighter future for people around the globe, and we will persist in taking on new challenges to better understand the microscopic world.

We have infused these sentiments and our commitment to the future in the logo, key message, statement, and key visual for this occasion.

This year the Nikon Healthcare Business Unit marks its 100th anniversary since the launch of the JOICO microscope in 1925. Throughout this century of microscope development, we have leveraged our optical and image-analysis technologies to continually pursue the creation of new value in life sciences and medical fields.

In recent years, our advanced imaging technologies, built on our expertise in cell-observation, have supported cutting-edge research and development, drug-discovery support, pathological diagnostics, and in vitro fertilization. We are also taking on new challenges, such as developing AI-powered diagnostic-support systems, and offering contract cell-manufacturing solutions aimed at realizing novel therapies for intractable diseases.

As we reach this significant centennial milestone, we will continue to build on our accumulated technologies and experience, proactively adopt new innovations, and deliver groundbreaking solutions in both hardware and software. Through these efforts, we remain committed to advancing science and medicine. Looking forward to the next 100 years, we will pursue evolution and challenge to continue contributing to enhancing people's quality of life around the world.
