Seattle Scientists Break Down Barriers in the Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer

mar 30, 2012

Nikon would like to offer congratulations to Dr. Sunil Hingorani and his staff at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, who are making incredible breakthroughs in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is a particularly deadly form of cancer, killing 40,000 people every year within four to six months of diagnosis. Treatment of the disease is made difficult by the collagen or scar tissue that surrounds pancreas tumors, acting as a fortress -- keeping chemotherapy from reaching the tumor.

Local Seattle TV station KOMO News recently profiled the team of scientists, led by Dr. Sunil Hingorani, who found an enzyme that penetrates the barriers caused by the tumors to deliver treatment. Their test trial on mice was a startling success, with the enzyme showing promising results within just 24 hours of a single dose. Clinical trials are currently underway. If effective in humans, this discovery will pave the way for chemotherapy to offer effective treatment of this form of cancer.
