Centro de Excelência
Monash Micro Imaging (MMI) has partnered with Nikon, a world-leading supplier of optical instrument technology, to establish Australia's first Nikon Centre of Excellence at Monash University. This state-of-the-art imaging center adds next-generation light microscopy to the university's extensive research infrastructure and bolsters research efforts from facilities at Monash University Clayton, Alfred Research Alliance (ARA), and Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP). It will serve as dynamic hubs for educating the research community on the fundamentals of microscopy and the latest advances in imaging technology.
The university has invested in four new Nikon systems in 2025: MMI-Clayton and MMI-ARA each feature a Nikon ECLIPSE Ti2-E AX R NSPARC super resolution confocal microscope with live-cell capabilities, while MMI-MHTP has a Nikon ECLIPSE Ti2-E widefield microscope with live-cell capabilities. In addition, MMI-ARA has acquired a Nikon ECLIPSE Ji with widefield spectral multiplexing and live-cell capabilities to support the extension at the Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre. These systems complement the existing Nikon AX R confocal microscope at MMI-MHTP and the Nikon ECLIPSE Ti2-E widefield live-cell microscope at the Victorian Heart Institute, another extension of MMI-Clayton (purchased in 2024).

The AX R is a recently developed iteration of Nikon’s flagship confocal system, and is capable of 2k resonant scanning in an expanded 25 mm FOV for fast, gentle imaging of sensitive samples. In addition, this system features Nikon’s new NSPARC Image Scanning detector, capable of deep, super-resolution imaging using a highly sensitive APD detector array.

This widefield system is capable of large sample imaging experiments and uses Nikon’s flagship ECLIPSE Ti2 inverted microscope base. It is also equipped with NIS-Elements 2D/3D Deconvolution and JOBS and General Analysis 3 for powerful control and analysis.
