Nikon N-STORM Unit Making a Big Splash in San Antonio
jun. 14, 2011

Just the second facility in the country to install the incredibly powerful Nikon N-STORM microscope, the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio is earning praise for its acquisition of this powerful scientific tool. Recently, local news station KENS-5 profiled the installation of the N-STORM at the University. The microscope will be used by UTHSC researchers to study, diagnose and heal human diseases. Before the N-STORM and this incredible technology, scientists had to rely on clues from biochemistry to study how viruses enter cells. However, this ultra-high resolution microscope – which creates images 6,000 to 10,000 times larger than what the human eye can see – now allows researchers to see and document cell interactions with viruses. This will ultimately determine better ways to fight them off.
The Nikon N-STORM (which stands for Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy), is one of the world’s most powerful microscopes allowing for an advanced form of optical microscopy. It allows life science researchers to observe tissues and cells more clearly thanks to its ability to create super-resolution and 3D images.
According to neuroscientist Jim Lechleiter, Ph.D., who will be using the N-STORM, “When you get something like this, you don’t know what’s going to happen. And you see things that you didn’t expect and that’s the fun part. It gives us another level of information that we didn’t have before.”
Nikon looks forward to seeing and hearing more about how the researchers at UTHSC utilize this tool in their research and the important discoveries they will make with its help.
