Professor Staffan Strömblad has been Professor of Clinical Molecular Biology at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition since 2009. Clinical molecular biology is the study of clinical processes at molecular level. Professor Strömblad's research is mainly focused on cancer and the interface between cancer cells and surrounding tissue. This includes the study of cell migration, i.e. how they move about, which is a central process in the spread of cancer and the development of secondary tumours. Professor Strömblad has developed a new method for this purpose, systems microscopy, which makes it possible to create mathematical models of dynamic cell processes, right down to molecular level.

Signal transduction refers to movement of signals from outside the cell to inside the cell as well as the movement of signals within a cell. Signal transduction can be initiated by the binding of ligands to membrane bound receptors or the entering of small molecules through the cell membrane. In the cellular environment signals are often propagated through phosphorylation events including kinases and phosphatases. Small molecules can also enter directly into the nucleus, effecting the activity of nuclear receptors that constitute a distinct class of transcription factors. The eventual outcome of signal transduction is an alteration in cellular activity and changes in the program of genes expressed within the responding cells.

A1Rsi Confocal with ECLIPSE Ti-E Inverted Microscope

The A1si is a powerful point scanning confocal microscope system suitable for a broad range of applications, particularly spectral resolution and rapid imaging. The A1R comes equipped with a unique hybrid scan head, incorporating both an ultra high-speed resonant scanner and a high-resolution galvano scanner, enabling simultaneous bleaching/photoactivation and acquisition. The enhanced spectral imaging capabilities feature acquisition of a 32-channel spectral image (512 x 512 pixels) with a single scan in 0.6 second. 512 x 32-pixel images can be captured at 24 fps.

ECLIPSE Ti2-E Inverted Microscope with CrestOptics X-Light V3 Confocal

Nikon's ECLIPSE Ti2-E inverted microscope configured with the CrestOptics X-Light V3 spinning disk is ideal for high-end microscopy applications, offering optimized performance for various tasks such as fast cell dynamics in live specimens and effective optical sectioning in cleared tissues. The system leverages micro-lens technology for homogeneous illumination, which accelerates the process of qualitative and quantitative imaging on large samples.

ECLIPSE Ti2-E Inverted Microscope with CrestOptics X-Light V3 Confocal and DeepSIM Super-Resolution

Nikon's ECLIPSE Ti2-E inverted microscope with the CrestOptics X-Light V3 spinning disk confocal and DeepSIM super-resolution module provides enhanced imaging of sub-cellular structures and to examine live-cell dynamics, with an XY resolution of 100 nm, without requiring any special sample preparation or dyes.

ECLIPSE Ti2-E Inverted Microscope with A1R HD25 Confocal

The Nikon A1R HD25 confocal microscope system's impressive 25 mm field of view not only reduces the number of images required for stitching together large images but also significantly decreases image acquisition times. This makes it particularly effective for high-throughput imaging applications. Furthermore, the combination of a high-speed resonant scanner and this large field of view forms an ideal platform for high-resolution screening assays, dramatically reducing the time needed for analyzing multiple samples and conditions. This system is especially advantageous in applications where rapid, large-scale, and detailed imaging is crucial.

ECLIPSE Ti-E Inverted Microscope with Yokogawa CSU-X1 Confocal, TIRF and SPECTRA X Light Engine

The CSU-X1 field scanning confocal spinning disk system from Yokogawa Life Sciences, integrated with Nikon’s ECLIPSE Ti-E inverted microscope, allows users a flexible and powerful system for a wide range of imaging applications. Field scanners are renowned for their low dosage, specimen-friendly characteristics, making them ideal for live cell or organism applications.

ECLIPSE Ti-E Inverted Microscope with MMI CellCut and CellEctor

Nikon's ECLIPSE Ti-E inverted microscope with MMI CellCut and CellEctor systems offers a highly precise and gentle method for microdissection, making the microscope ideal for isolating samples without degradation. This ensures meaningful downstream analyses in various fields such as genomics and proteomics.
